Behind the Scenes at Carnival

Believe it or not, I actually had the chance to go on a 3 day cruise on the lovely Carnival Imagination about 2 weeks ago. I swear being on the Imagination was pure dumb luck, as my main reason for the trip was to visit my brother who is currently working on board. Visiting him gave me a very unique look at a behind-the-scenes view of the cruise. I stayed with him in a crew cabin, ate in the staff mess hall, and hung out with his friends on board

What lies behind these curtains?
Where does the staff live?|
Stop 1- my brother’s cabin where I would be spending the next 3 days. To get there I had to take an elevator allllll the way to the bottom. And just when I think I couldn't go any lower, there were some steps to take me further down. Now if you think your cabin is small, you haven’t see anything. I would estimate the average crew cabin to be about half the size of a standard cabin; and most of them have bunkbeds set up to accommodate 2 people. Plus the average contract of a crew member is 6 months. Think about how much you packed for 3 days…now think about what you’d have to pack for 6 months. Sadly I think I packed more for my 3 day cruise than my brother packs when he’s gone for months at a time :/

Anyway, the cabin itself has 1 desk and a TV. The staff members do get a teeny tiny bathroom en suite, to the point where I literally am simultaneously in the shower, while on the toilet. Yes it is possible. And they actually do have cabin stewards for the crew as well to change their linens. I took a few pics of his cabin, but his room would probably be the equivalent of a suite in the crew world. His position allows him a solo room where he doesnt have to share with anyway; most rooms feature a bunk bed and 2 people living there.

My bro's cabin

I found that they staff very much operates on a hierarchy system with 3 basic groups- crew, staff, and officers. Each of which have their own dining room. It actually reminded me of that Friends episode where Ross and Joey worked at the museum and the blue coats couldn’t sit with the white coats. Anyway, crew members consist of the housekeeping and wait-staff. Staff members include the entertainment department, spa, dancers, shop workers, etc. And officers include, well, the officers.

What do they eat?

Another topic that I know I had questions about is- what do the staff eat? Are they eating in the buffet when we’re not looking? Well, there are 3 separate mess halls on deck 3 for all the staff. They do have buffets down there, but no where near the quantity and variety guests receive. The hours are also rather limiting, so it becomes important to hit the mess hall before it closes, or you’ll be SOL. There were a couple things that surprised me though.

1- They actually had a ‘midnight buffet’ every night for the staff. Though it makes sense if a lot of people are working during the evening and then need to eat afterward. I found it funny that they seemed to have more choices than guests at that hour, because as a guest I find when the clock strikes midnight I had 3 choices for food- pizza, ice cream, or pizza and ice cream.

2- Particularly for the midnight buffet, I actually thought they had some delicious looking international food choices that we don't generally see as guests either. But it makes so much sense considering the staff comes from over 40 different countries- with the highest population coming from India and the Philippines. So naturally they want comforts of home.

Crew members are also allowed to eat in the main dining room on occasion if they fill out a bunch of paper-work. Generally this is done if they have friends/family visiting (ie what my bro did when I visited!)

What do they do for fun?

For most people when they’re done working, they leave their office or wherever they work, and go home at the end of the day. That’s not the case when you work on a cruise ship. You are confined to being on that ship. But I was happy to learn that they do have a lot of ways to keep busy. They have a crew bar called the Oasis Lounge. It’s a pretty chill place with pool tables, TVs, couches, and of course a bar. And the best part (in my humble opinion) is that the drinks are dirt cheap. I got a beer for $1.25, which would be 5 times the price if I went upstairs to a guest bar.

Crew bar

Aside from crew bar, they do have activities planned for the crew such as movie nights, talent shows, and karaoke to name a few. They also receive discounts on most all of the fun things guests are offered such as 40% off at the spa or a discounted rate for excursions.

Generally, how does their schedule work?
When you go on a cruise, you know how quickly they turn those ships over. As soon as that last person leaves the prior cruise, the next batch of guests is eagerly ready to board. So when do crew members have time off?

Well, most crew members will sign 6-month contracts and pretty much work for 6 months straight. They will have blocks of time off, especially during port days. But for all intents and purposes, they dont have a full day off in 6 months. So what my brother has done in the past is work 6 months on; come home for 1-2 months; and back out for 6 months.

Well, those are the highlights. If you have any other questions, please feel free to ask! And if it's something I don't know, I'll ask my brother.

Cruise Swag

I often get asked about merchandise on board in terms of what they have and the costs. So here's the lowdown based on my experiences on the 2011 cruise.

When to Shop
When it comes to the merchandise, I noticed that there's really not a good time to go. In the beginning of the cruise I found it to be super crowded, lines out the door and down the hall. Even inside there was barely room to move around and shop. But towards the end I found that some of the more popular items did sell out. I suggest shopping when the alternate group has their event. That lessens the lines a bit, though still expect crowds.

My secret from last year, which worked really well, is that I went the very first night when the other group had their event, and my group was supposed to be at dinner. That means that everyone on the ship was either in the lounge or at dinner. So I had zero lines, zero crowds in the room, and a full selection of everything. To clarify, I didn't skip out on dinner, but rather my friends and I all took turns in small groups leaving the dinner table for 5 minutes- got our stuff, and came back. This worked really well!

What to Shop
Here are some of the items they had available on the 2011 cruise:
  • Blue wheel Jr T-shirt- $40
  • Black wheel Jr T-shirt- $40
  • Anchor Sweatshirt- $60
  • Black metal Sphynkter T-shirt- $35
  • Pink mermaid tank- $35
  • Pink baseball tank- $35
  • Gray T-shirt- ?
  • Shot glass- $12
  • Gray mermaid long sleeve-?
  • This is Us Key Chain- $5
  • Cruise Key chain- $5
  • Towel- $30
  • Tote bag- $15
  • Pajama Jam Sleep mask- $10
  • Pins- $5
  • Black & White photo- $5
  • Pink Slap Bracelet- $10
  • I <3 BSB Underwear- $25
*I apologize I don't have all of the prices.

Merch Gallery

Now obviously they will have a different selection for the upcoming cruise, but this can give you an idea of what to expect and how much to budget for souvenirs. And budget more than you'd expect. I have one thought in mind before I go, but once on board I know I'm guilty of the thought, "Well this is the only chance to buy it, I better stock up now so I don't regret it later." There's definitely a few things I bought that I thought Id use, now sitting in my closet collecting dust.

Other Things to Keep in Mind

1- Some of the items they sell on the cruise are also sold online in the Backstreet store. For example the slap bracelet, underwear, and most non-cruise specific merchandise. Thus if you have a limited budget but still see things you want, go for the cruise-specific merch first. You can most likely get the rest online later.

2- Any extra merchandise will most likely go online in the Backstreet store at a discount in the future. Not something I would rely on if you see something you really want, but there is that possibility.

Also be sure to check out my post on the 2010 Merch to see what they sold on the first cruise.

Payment Due Today

Not a very exciting post, just a reminder to all of you cruisers that our next payment is due today, and the amount due will vary depending on the price of your cabin. You shouldn't have to do anything- Rose Tours will automatically charge the credit card on file. If they have any issues with a credit card not working for whatever reason (new bill address, new expiration date, etc) they will contact you; they will not cancel your reservation. So don't worry!

Meanwhile those of you who are on the waitlist, payment time usually means some people will be cancelling as they realize the trip might be more they can afford. So I wouldnt be surprised if the waitlist starts moving a bit.

The only good news about a payment...it means we're getting closer to cruise time!

Fan Problems

A while back I enjoyed doing a post on cruiser problems, so I thought it would be fun to go a bit more broad and do general BSB fan problems. And a special section of Spoiled BSB fan problems as well. Enjoy!

Top 5 of 2012

As we're already starting off 2013, which promises to be a big year in the Backstreet world with their 20th anniversary coming up, I thought I'd reflect back on 2012 and go through my favorite BSB moments of 2012. Sorry for the delay on this!

5. Mixtape Festival
Mixtape was a lot of fun and I got a chance to see a bunch of my friends who flew in for the event. Plus I got to see some other amazing artists I probably wouldn't have otherwise seen. It was great to be part of the very last performance by NKOTBSB, take part of the first ever BSBBQ, and see Brian & Leighanne at the Wylee party. Overall a wonderful weekend!
The only reason this unfortunately fell to the bottom of my BSB list was due to all the unnecessary drama that surrounded the event with how incredibly disorganized the event was.

4. New Years Eve Concert
I was quite fortunate to take part of the Backstreet Boys New Years Eve concert. This was a fantastic show that I got to spend with my friends. The format reminded me a lot of the cruise concert- nothing too fancy. No pyro or costume changes. Just good ole fashion BSB with a bunch of the favorite classics sprinkled with a few ones we don't get to hear as often like Don't Want You Back. The show didn't have the production value as some of their tours, but that didn't make it any less enjoyable. It was such a fun and memorable way to ring in the New Year!

3. Good Morning America
This was a really amazing event for a bunch of different reasons. First being that it was the first event with Kevin back. It was so sweet to see how choked up he got singing his part in IWITW. It was also great to see his wife and son singing and dancing along on the side. The other reason I really enjoyed this event is because I had never been to a live event like this before with the Backstreet Boys. I found it really neat to see all the "behind the scenes" things that are going on when they're on commercial break; how they rehearse; and even came out to give us breakfast before they went on air!

2. Nick's I'm Taking Off Tour
I really enjoyed Nick's solo tour and I thought he put on an amazing show from start to finish. Great mix of his old and new songs, covers, and BSB stuff. It's always nice to see any of the guys in a more intimate setting. I think this nears the top of my list because it was nice to see Nick outside of BSB and I found him to be a lot more personable and himself during his solo show. And you can't call yourself a true fan until you've waited hours outside in the February cold for a GA show.

1. NKOTBSB in Geneva
My favorite event this year was seeing NKOTBSB in Geneva. Even though I had seen the show a few times before in the states, it ended up being one of my favorites. I got to meet the guys; do a sound check party backstage, which ended up being unique in that it was just a big Q&A with no songs. Above all, they allowed me the opportunity to travel and see places I probably never otherwise would've gotten to see. And I was able to share the experience with some of my best friends.

Are You Compatible Roommates?

I'm a little late on this quiz as most of you probably already have your roommates. But I still thought it would be fun.

1.       You see Howie eating lunch at the lido buffet with his family. You..?
a. Steal a quick glance and continue outside to the pool as planned.
b. Grab your food and conveniently sit at a nearby table with a good view of Howie.
c. Walk right up to his table and ask him for a picture and autograph.
2.       In between events you will most likely be found...
a. Relaxing in the hot tub. You’re happy have some down time and take a break from the Backstreet Boys for a while
b. Checking out door decorations, and hey, maybe you’ll run into a Backstreet Boy in the hall if you’re lucky.
c. Camping outside of Nick’s cabin waiting for him to come out.
3.       When do you plan on going to bed?
a. You expect to return to your cabin before midnight because traveling is quite exhausting.
b. After a couple hours at the deck party, you’ll probably head back to your cabin around 2 or 3am.
c. Bed? You’re not sleeping at all this cruise in order to soak up every second of breathing the same air as AJ.
4.       At a deck party you will most likely be...
a. In bed. Those deck parties are too late for you.
b. Enjoying the excitement
c. Right up front for the best view after hours of waiting to claim that spot.
5.       What are you willing to do to get into VIP?
a. Eh, VIP isn’t really your thing. If it happens great, but you won’t go seek it out.
b. You might make a few extra trips to pass the security guards to try your luck at catching their attention but not much beyond that.
c. Anything and everything. You will be Mrs. Carter one day and need to make sure Nick sees you sooner than later.
6.       On the cruise you are happy...
a. Being in the Caribbean and exploring the ports
b. Attending the Backstreet Boys events and the general atmosphere
c. Only when you are as close to a backstreet boy as humanly possible
7.      Your idea of fun at the beach party is?
a. Soaking up some sun by the ocean
b. Enjoying the BBQ and watching BSB when the finally arrive from a comfortable distance away
c. Camping out in front of the stage for hours just so you have a good spot when BSB finally arrives.

Mostly As
If you AND your roommate answered mostly As, congratulations! You guys are a match made I heaven. Though I wonder why you're shelling out all this money to go on a Backstreet Boy cruise when your main interests seem to be on just enjoying the cruise itself. You're primarily going for the experience of cruising in the Caribbean than enjoying BSB. Hey, whatever floats your boat!

Mostly Bs
If you AND your roommate answered mostly Bs,congratulations! You will get along splendidly because you both get the same amount of excitement from seeing the Backstreet Boys on the cruise but also don't feel the need to follow their every move to be happy.

Mostly Cs
If you AND your roommate answered mostly Cs, congratulations! You each found yourself a wonderful buddy that shares the same level of passion as you do. Hopefully you'll even have the chance to get to know each other because there are exactly 5 reasons, and 5 reasons only, why you are doing this cruise- Nick, Brian, Howie, AJ, & Kevin.

If you and your roommates don't match up, that's okay too. But you might want to have a few talks to set expectations. This quiz is all in good fun, but I still think there's actually some truth behind it. I think its key that you and your roommates are on the same wavelength about what you want to get out of the experience.
